Phenol plant waste water (1) containing small amounts of phenol and sodium sulfate is successfully distilled (7) through the addition of recovered sodium sulfate (3) to enhance the volatility of the phenol relative to water, at least a portion (3) of the sodium sulfate (15) is recycled, while a significant portion (17) of the phenol (5) can be returned to the phenol plant for recovery.
