PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a relatively low-molecular weight cellulose through extraction from the cellulose of Elodea Nuttallii as a kind of hydrophyte. SOLUTION: This method for producing a low-molecular weight cellulose comprises the following process: Elodea Nuttallii as raw material is boiled in hot water, the resulting residues are then subjected to boiling treatment in a 1-2% dilute aqueous alkali solution followed by a 1-2% dilute aqueous acid solution and then a 16-32% concentrated alkali solution.
