PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decompose/remove nitrate nitrogen efficiently at a normal temperature by providing a reduction process in which water containing nitrate nitrogen is added with a reducing agent and contacted with a palladium-supported reduction catalyst and an ammonia removing process for removing ammonia from the water which passed through the reduction process. SOLUTION: In the treatment of water containing nitrate nitrogen, a reduction process in which the water is added with a reducing agent and contacted with a palladium-supported reduction catalyst and an ammonia removing process for removing ammonia from the water which passed through the reduction process. The kind of the reducing agent is not restricted, and hydrogen gas and others can be used appropriately. The carrier of the reduction catalyst is not restricted in particular, and alumina and others can be used. The particle size of the carrier is not restricted in particular; however, its average particle size is preferably 0.05-10 mm. The ammonia removing process is not restricted in particular, and for example, adsorption removal by a cation exchanger can be adopted.
