PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a highly pure methine dye in good yields by condensing two specified compounds with each other. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I is condensed with 0.5-3.0 mol, per mol of the compound of formula I, of a compound of formula II at 0-100 deg.C, desirably, 10-80 deg.C in an inert solvent in the presence of, optionally, from 0.1 mol, per mol of the starting compounds, to a large excess amount, of a lowly nucleophilic organic base to obtain a methine dye of formula III. In the formulae, A is an activating group; W1 and W2 are each a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, a substituted or unsubstituted aryl, or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group; L1 to L3 are each a substituted or unsubstituted methine; a is 0-3; Z is an atomic group necessary to form a five- or six-membered nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring; R1 is a substituted or unsubstituted aryl; R2 is H, a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl, or a substituted or unsubstituted heterocyclic group; L4 and L5 are each a substituted or unsubstituted methine; p is 0 or 1; and (M)m is a group of counterions necessary to neutralize the charge of the molecule.
