PURPOSE: A control method for a shifting operation of an automatic transmission is provided to prevent an engine from being damaged by adjusting the shift range of the automatic transmission when the automatic transmission abnormally changes speed regardless of the driving speed of the engine. CONSTITUTION: To control a shifting operation of an automatic transmission, a control system checks if a gearshift lever is in second speed and decides if the automatic transmission changes the gearshift lever to an upper range or a lower range. In case of the upper range, when an engine an rpm(revolutions per minute) is more than an rpm for the upper range, the gearshift lever is changed to a third shift range. In case of the lower range, when the engine rpm is more than an rpm for the lower range, the gearshift lever is changed to the third shift range.
