PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a picture with much presence onto a projection screen by displaying a picture with high resolution and sufficiently satisfied image quality and increasing a ratio in a horizontal direction. SOLUTION: Reflection spatial optical modulation plates 1, 2, 3 are provided with a pixel area where 1024-1080 pixels are placed vertically and 3840-4096 pixels are placed horizontally in a matrix form with an aspect ratio of about 16:9 with pixel electrodes placed at a pitch of 14.7-14.9μm vertically and 7.5-7.7μm horizontally. Then a projection lens 19 provided with an anamorphic lens 20 is used to project a picture on the pixel area of the reflection spatial optical modulation plates 1, 2, 3 onto a projection screen as a picture with about square pixels with an aspect ratio of about 4:1.
