PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform indexing of a can quickly at low cost by aligning the direction of a pattern applied to the can with the pasting position of a sticker when a campaign sticker is pasted onto the outer circumferential surface of a beer can. SOLUTION: The indexing apparatus comprises a pattern input section 2 where the pattern on a can W can be read out in the circumferential direction, a comparison target memory section 3 for storing the data read out for single circumference at the pattern input section 2 as a basic data, a section 4 for comparing the data read out, as an extraction data, from a part of the outer circumferential surface at the pattern input section 2 with the basic data in the comparison target memory section 3 and locating the extraction data, and a position converting section 5 for positioning an objective can W of the extraction data based on the comparison results from the data comparing section 4.
