PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plasma display device eliminating addition of toxic mercury vapor and extending the life. SOLUTION: A plasma cell 2 constituting a display device is provided with a pair of boards 3, 8 joined with a prescribed gap to form a insulated space, that is filled in the space and can be ionized, and discharge electrodes 9 which are formed on the lower board 8 and ionize the gas to generate discharges in the space. The gas mainly comprises inert element selected from krypton or xenon, and the discharge electrodes 9 are coated with a protective coat 15 comprising boride, thereby eliminating addition of mercury vapor to the gas. Preferably the protective film 15 comprises lanthanum boride deposited by electrodeposition. In some cases, a material ovezoating the discharge electrode selected from yttrium boride, zirconium boride, chromium boride, or titanium boride and a discharge gas compriging xenon can be combined.
