A bridge which connects network portions, receives broadcast packets transmitted on a first bus which contain at least one field of a first type identifying at least one peripheral, and at least one field of a second type describing the path taken to arrive at the bridge. The information in the field of the first type is compared with a predetermined value at the end of the packet to determine if the received packet is intended for one of the peripheral devices connected to the first bus. Preferably the predetermined value represents the identifications of all the peripherals connected to the first bus. Independent claims are included for: (a) a device for determining the path of a packet in a network with at least one bridge; (b) a device for receiving a packet in a network with at least one bridge; (c) a bridge connecting at least two parts of a network and including a path determining device; (d) a bridge connecting at least two parts of a network and including a packet receiving device; (e) a packet switching network using such a bridge; (f) and a data processing device in the form of a printer, server, computer, facsimile, scanner, VTR, (digital) camcorder, decoder, TV receiver, or digital still camera. |
