At least one characteristic of a first part of the network to which a bridge is connected is determined, and based on this, the length of an identifier associated with this part of the network is determined. The identifier is then assigned to at least the one bridge connected to this part of the network. The source and destination fields of an asynchronous packet are analyzed to carry out the routing required via the bridges as necessary. Independent claims are included for : (a) a device for determining an identifier for at least one bridge in a network; (b) a bridge connecting at least two parts of a network; (c) a packet switching network using such a bridge; (d) and a data processing device in the form of a printer, server, computer, facsimile, scanner, VTR, (digital) camcorder, decoder, TV receiver, or digital still camera. |
