This process for the production of a fluoroalcohol of the formula: H(CFRCF2)nCH2OH Where R is F or CF3 when n is 1 and R is F when n is 2, comprises reacting methanol with tetrafluoroethylene or hexafluoropropylene in the presence of a free radical source, and subjecting the reaction mixture to distillation in the presence of a base.
