PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect a toxic substance on the basis of damage to a DNA. SOLUTION: This method includes a first process contacting a cell 1 retaining a DNA 2 with an inspection sample, a second process sampling the DNA 2 from the cell 1 contacted with the inspection sample, and a third process comparing the sampled DNA 2 with a DNA coming from a cell which was not contacted with the inspection sample and detecting existence of damage. When damage is detected in the DNA 2 coming from the cell 1 contacted with the inspection sample, a toxic substance is detected in that inspection sample. Thus, a detection directly reflecting an effect of a toxic material to an organism is performed because the toxic material is detected using a directly damaged portion as an index and this result is directly observed without going through a secondary process such as a transcription.
