In a point of sale transaction system, such as those used in supermarkets, the client and server computers may be provided by different systems developers and run different software. In such a case, the client and server point-of sale computers run "isolation layer" software that acts as an intermediary between the client and server. The isolation layer translates requests from the client into a form that the server can understand, and vice-versa. This allows otherwise incompatible client and server software to communicate.
|
