PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make the number of teeth of a gear stably countable at a high speed. SOLUTION: A method for calculating number of teeth includes an image picking-up step S1 of picking up the image of a gear, an original gear picture extracting step S2 of extracting a gear area as an original gear image from the gradation image picked up in the step S1 and, at the same time, calculating the center position of the original gear image, and a rotationally processing step S3 of rotating the original gear image extracted in the step S2 by a prefixed angle around the calculated center position. The method also includes an uncoincident part extracting step S4 of extracting the uncoincident parts between the original gear image extracted in the step S2 and the gear image rotated in the step S3, a number-of-uncoincident-part counting step S5 of counting the number of the uncoincident parts extracted in the step S4, and a number-of-teeth outputting step S6 of outputting the number of uncoincident parts counted in the step S5 as the number of teeth of the gear the image of which is picked up in the step S1. |
