PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a reflection type liquid crystal display device which is bright with high visibility and which can be easily produced at a low cost by disposing a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal layer between electrode substrates, a reflection layer, and moreover, a transmission type diffraction element layer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device is equipped with a liquid crystal cell having a liquid crystal layer 3 formed between two electrode substrates 1, 1' facing each other, and a reflection layer 4, and a transmission type diffraction element layer 5. The transmission type diffraction element layer 5 shows such a phenomenon that when waves such as light are shielded by an obstruct, the light creeps into the shadow area of the obstruct, namely, the light bends. The phenomenon of the transmission type diffraction element layer 5 is used to improve the brightness and visibility of the reflection type liquid crystal display device. Namely, by making the external light necessary for the display coincident with the visible direction of light, the characteristics are improve. As for the transmission type diffraction element layer 5, especially among phase diffraction elements, a material having a smectic liquid crystal phase having a helical structure or one that the alignment is fixed is preferably used.
