PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture of smooth gradation characteristic free obtained by eliminating a pseudo contour and to obtain a picture suppressing the deterioration of a character definition by controlling whether to add noise to a picture signal corresponding to an input picture or not. SOLUTION: A noise generation circuit 215 is inserted between an output filter 210 and an LUT (conversion table) 211. Then, whether to add noise or not in this circuit 215 is controlled depending on whether as a printer for outputting a CG, etc., prepared by a host computer or as the copier of an original a user uses a digital color copying machine. To put it in the concrete, the circuit 215 is controlled to avoid adding noise in the case of copying which reads the picture from a full color sensor 34 (the reader part A of the copying machine) and to add noise in the case of printing which inputs the picture from external input parts 213 and 214.
