PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize partitions and to allow an operator to freely allocate a convenient drive character by handling one removable device as plural drives. SOLUTION: A computer system is started, and an operating system, a file system and the device driver for a DVD-RAM device are installed (S1 and 2). A drive character is allocated to a hard disk drive, and the device driver is requested to perform drive character allocation to the DVD-RAM device and stores the number of maximum partitions to be handled to the operating system and the file system (S3). An area for the number of maximum partitions is secured as a partition information storage area in an internal working area of the device driver, and the operating system allocates plural drive characters of a drive corresponding to the DVD-RAM device and finishes the processing (S4 to 6).
