The base is machined from a hard and possibly semi-precious material, to provide a decorative casing for the watch. The base plate for a watch movement is made from a single piece of mineral material, whose hardness is greater than or equal to 5 Mohs. Machining is carried out by ultrasound by use of at least one 'sonotrode' which provides a negative of the base plate to be machined. The material used may be glass, quartz or precious or semi-precious stone. The structure may include stones set into holes formed in the base plate, the stones forming the bearings for mobile elements of the watch mechanism. The base plate material may be chosen for its color and clarity and veining, whilst the hour markers may be attached to the cover glass of the watch.
