PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the user-friendliness by providing a degree of freedom set the aspect ratio and setting the size of a recording object area even in the case of photographing a moving picture. SOLUTION: The image pickup device is provided with pixel number reduction means (10, 11) that reduce the number of pixels included in a recording object area so that the number of pixels in the recording object area set by recording object setting means (5, 6, 7) is the number of pixels for each frame or below processable by an image compression means 3 and an image size arithmetic means 12 that calculates the number of pixels in horizontal and vertical directions included in the recording object area whose the number of pixels is reduced by the pixel number reduction means and outputs the calculated number to the image compression means 3.
