PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct image overwrite processing at a high speed without degrading image quality with an inexpensive configuration. SOLUTION: An image information interpretation section 1 interprets received image information, separates image data of an image object and position information or the like and outputs them to an image processing section 2 and an overwrite decision section 3 or the like. Then image processing section 2 applies prescribed image processing to the image object. The overwrite decision section 3 decides on which area of a page the overwrite processing is required. An overwrite information register 4 latches a discrimination result of the overwrite decision section 3. A coder 6 applies compression coding to pixel data in a small area and outputs code data. An image memory 8 stores pixel data in a small area requiring the overwrite processing and the code data in the unit of small areas. A synthesis processing section 5 applies overwrite synthesis to background pixel data read from the image memory 8 and pixel data received from the image processing section 2.
