The use of olanzapine for treating substance abuse in a mammal in need of such treatment. The substance abuse may be physical dependence on a compound selected from the group consisting of opioids, anxiolytic and hypnotic drugs, cocaine, psychedelic agents, marijuana, amphetamines, hallucinogens, phencyclidine, benzodiazepines. The amount of olanzapine administered is in the range of 1 mg to 20 mg per day.
