The piston head (3) may have a generally flat top face, sloping gently downward near the edge. Bores (2) drilled at intervals around the edge of the top face allow combustion gases to flow into the groove (4) behind the piston ring (5). Further passages (7) allow the gases to escape from the groove into the space under the piston head.
