Hydrocarbon charge is treated in one section of a 3-section reactor containing a hydroconversion catalyst on a fluidized bed. Catalyst particles are removed from the effluent which is then subjected to catalytic hydrotreatment in a fixed bed reactor to produce a low sulfur high middle-distillate product. The conversion process is operated on a hydrocarbon fraction having a sulfur content of at least 0.1% wt. and an initial boiling point of 340 deg C. min. and final boiling point 440 deg C. min..The stages are characterized as follows :- (a) hydroconversion is carried out in the presence of H2 in a triphasic reactor containing a catalyst on an amorphous mineral support in a fluidized bed. The process operates in ascending liquid/gaseous mode, the reactor comprising an upper inlet for fresh catalyst and a lower outlet for used catalyst; (b) the effluent from (a) is directed to a section for the elimination of catalyst fines and recovery of effluent; and (c) the effluent from (b) is directed to a hydrotreatment section comprising a reactor containing a hydrotreatment catalyst supported on an amorphous mineral support in a fixed bed, functioning in conditions such as to produce a low S-containing effluent with a high content of middle distillate.
