PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alkaline storage battery equipped with an enhanced high-rate discharge characteristic by enhancing the current collecting performance of any unwelded portion produced eventually on a current collector to be welded to or contacted with the bottom of an exterior can made of metal. SOLUTION: An alkaline storage battery has a positive electrode current collector welded to the end of a positive electrode plate 10 of a spiral electrode body and a negative electrode current collector welded to the end of a negative electrode plate 20 of the spiral electrode body, and the negative electrode current collector is welded to the inside bottom surface of an exterior can but not welded to a part of the end part of the outermost extremity of the negative electrode plate 20, wherein the outermost extremity of the negative electrode plate 20 is in pressure contact with the side wall inner surface of the exterior can. The pressure contacting in this manner allows uniform currect collecting from the negative electrode plate 20, so that voltage drop is reduced and the high-rate discharge characteristic is enhanced.
