PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce wrong FAX by decreasing a redialing frequency when sensing a line being disconnected while no busy tone is detected if the opposite side which is called enters the off-hook state. SOLUTION: This facsimile machine has a polarity inversion detection part 1 as a detecting means for knowing off-hook operation and a busy-tone detection part 2 as a detecting means for detecting a busy tone. The facsimile machine after making a call for the 1st time or again detects whether or not the voltage of a communication line is inverted in polarity by the polarity inversion detection part 1 provided in it. When the inversion of the polarity is detected, it is detected whether the opposite party becomes the off-hook state. When the polarity is not inverted, the redialing frequency is not changed. When the off- hook operation is detected, it is detected whether or not the line is detected and when the line is disconnected, the redialing frequency is decreased or the redialing is inhibited.
