Slag coating of a converter lining, by applying slag at just above its melting point onto a lining region at just below the slag melting point, is new. Slag coating of the lining of a converter, for refining metals and non-metallic melts, is carried out by cooling the slag resulting from the refining or similar slag from other processes to /-10 (preferably /-20) K above its melting point, cooling at least the lining region to be coated to <= 20 (preferably <= 40) K below the slag melting point and applying the cooled slag onto this lining region. An Independent claim is also included for a converter lining coating produced by the above process.
