Use of non-volatile new and known 2-chloro-1-azolyl-ethanol compounds, as nitrification inhibitors in fertilizers

Non-volatile 2-chloro-1-azolyl-ethanol compounds (I), or their acid addition products, are used as nitrification inhibitors for nitrogen fertilizers. Some compounds (I) are also new. Use of non-volatile 2-chloro-1-azolyl-ethanol compounds of formula (I), or their acid addition products, as nitrification inhibitors for nitrogen fertilizers, is new. A = CR<5> or N; R<5> = H, Cl or Me; R<1>, R<2> = H or 1-4C alkyl; R<3>, R<4> = H or Cl Independent claims are included for: (1) compounds (Ia) i.e. compounds (I) in which A = CR<5>, provided that when R<3> and R<4> are Cl, then R<1>, R<2> and R<5> are not all H; and (2) a process for preparing (Ia).
