The invention relates to a cutting machine, notably a tire tread cutting machine, which comprises at least one cutting blade (8) which can be linearly displaced on a blade carriage (1) such that it carries out a feed motion and is rotated by a motor (2). The motor (2) driving the cutting blade (8) is positioned outside the blade carriage (1) and a torque transmission means comprising a means for transmitting tensile forces is provided for between the motor (2) and the cutting blade (8). The mass of the part of the torque transmission means which can be displaced by means of the blade carriage (1) is significantly lower than the mass of the motor (2). The motor (2) is provided with a device configured as a speed regulator or speed controller which keeps the speed of the cutting blade (8) at least approximately constant during a feed motion of the cutting blade (8).
