摘要 Emissions from a source of radiation (12) pass through the band (10) or are reflected from it. They reach a detector (14) having a surface (16) subdivided irregularly into a number of discrete sensors (18). An Independent claim is included for the corresponding method of measuring characteristics of a material band, especially of paper. Preferred features: Discrete sensors (18) vary in size and/or shape, with respect to their detection surfaces. Sensor density per unit area varies. There are more at the center than at the edges. There are differently-constructed regions, these are mutually offset, or can be so positioned. Regions may be of identical construction in terms of size and shape of their individual detection surfaces. Some detection surfaces are lengthy, especially rectangular or trapezium-shaped. Sensor numbers along the band, exceed the numbers across the band. Individual row(s) of sensors are provided. Local sensors are: concentric annular, rectangular, triangular or circular.
