A plastic gear wheel is reinforced with fibers, preferably continuous filament carbon fibers, and has the fibers in the teeth arranged so that one set (3) is perpendicular to the flanks (6) and a second set (2) parallel to the flanks (6). Additional fibers (4) are placed within the body (1) of the gear. The fibers can be interlocked by embroidery techniques. The fibers are assembled to the required configuration within the same mold that is used for molding the plastic, preferably using a liquid mixture in a resin transfer molding process.
