Production of alkaline earth metal salts of aliphatic beta -keto compounds (I) comprises: (a) adding (I) to a powdered alkaline earth metal hydroxide, withdrawing a vapor stream comprising water and (I), and adding fresh and/or recycled (I) continuously or portionwise until no more water is formed; and (b) drying the reaction mixture.
