The heater has a combustion chamber (2) with a glow plug (4) with a connector (3) that communicates with the combustion chamber, a fuel pump (5) that feeds fuel to the connector, a fan (8) that feeds fresh air to the combustion chamber and a controller (10) that actuates the glow plug, fuel pump and fan. A temperature sensor (15) measures the temperature of the air fed to the combustion chamber and generates a signal correlated with the temperature that is fed to the controller that selects and performs one of several starting processes depending on the measured temperature.
