Light matter is separated from a liquid by diverting the liquid into a separation tank where the light matter continuously floats into an overhead collection tank which can be separated from the separation tank for light matter disposal. An Independent claim is also included for a light matter separation apparatus comprising a separation tank, an overhead collection chamber and an outlet which discharges clean liquid supplied upwards from the mid-height region of the separation tank and which determines the liquid level, the outlet (20) being located above the highest point of the separation tank (10) and the collection chamber being formed by a collection tank (30) which is separably connected by a shut-off valve (26) to the highest point of the separation tank (10) and which extends upwards above the separation tank (10).
