An automotive exhaust gas sensor element has a solid electrolytic body (10) the surface of which has a reference gas side-electrode (12) and a side-electrode (11) for the measured gas. The measured-gas side-electrode has a porous protective coating (13) incorporating a lead-getter, reacting with any lead in the exhaust gases. The lead-getter prevents the deposition of lead on the side-electrode .
