A sample module is provided for use in a downhole tool to obtain fluid from a subsurface formation penetrated by a wellbore. The sample module comprises a sample chamber <B>110</B> carried by the module for collecting a sample of formation fluid obtained from the formation, and a validation chamber <B>112</B> carried by the module for collecting a substantially smaller sample of formation fluid than the sample chamber <B>110</B>. The validation chamber <B>112</B> is removable from the sample module at the surface without disturbing the sample chamber <B>110</B>. The sample chambers comprise a floating piston charged on one side by a pressurised fluid to maintain the samples in a single phase. In another aspect of the present invention the sample chambers include a body capable of withstanding heating at the surface, following collection of a formation fluid sample, to temperatures necessary to promote recombination of the sample components within the chambers. Additionally, the said chambers are provided with metal to metal seals for storing the sample collected therein for an indefinite period without substantial degradation of the sample. |
