PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous resin composition which yields a mixed aqueous solution having a good viscosity stability and therefore exerts an excellent workability and also shows an excellent water resistance even when dried at a comparatively low temperature, and a paper coating agent using the resin composition. SOLUTION: A resin composition comprises (A) a saponified product of a diacetone acrylamide/fatty acid vinyl ester copolymer containing from 0.1 to 15 mol% diacetone acrylamide unit, (B) a polyhydrazide compound and (C) a monohydrazide compound, wherein the polyhydrazide compound (B) may be (D) a polyhydrazide derivative which is previously allowed to react with a ketone, and may be further mixed with (E) an organic amine compound. A paper coating agent mainly comprises the resin composition.
