PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel calcium carbonate-based fluorescent substance, which can be supplied at a very low cost, and red-color fluorescent composition with the same fluorescent substance as a luminescent component, and also to provide a method for producing the same fluorescent substance. SOLUTION: This fluorescent substance of crystalline calcium carbonate, mainly of vaterite structure and additionally of calcite structure, activated with mixed Mn and Ce is obtained by adding carbonate ion to a mixed aqueous solution of water-soluble calcium, manganese and cerium compounds to separate a gel-like material mainly composed of calcium carbonate, and agitating the solution suspending the gel-like material to accelerate crystallization of calcium carbonate. The fluorescent substance illuminates in red, when irradiated with near-ultraviolet ray, e.g. that emitted from a black light. It gives various fluorescent compositions, when added to coating materials, concrete or plastics.
