PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a magnetic recording medium capable of improving the yield of the product and the efficiency of utilizing a vapor depositing material by reducing the distribution and variation of the thickness of a vapor deposition film in the film running direction and stabilizing it. SOLUTION: In a method for producing a magnetic recording medium body in which, while a bandlike substrate film 5 is continuously moved along the circumferential side face of a cylindrical rotary can 4 rotatably arranged in a vacuum tank 3, a ferromagnetic material is melted and evaporated from an evaporating material vessel 13, on the evaporating material vessel 13, an overflowing port 14 for fixedly retaining the height of the molten metal surface 13A of the melted ferromagnetic material is formed. In this way, the distribution and variation of the thickness of the vapor deposition film in the film running direction are reduced to stabilize it, by which the yield of the production and the efficiency of utilizing the vapor depositing material are improved.
