PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately form a desired concentration distribution of a component and produce a glass having excellent properties in high yield by immersing at least one wet gel formed by the gelatinization of a sol by a sol-gel method while forming a uniform flow of the immersion liquid on the surface of the wet gel. SOLUTION: A glass is produced by a sol-gel method comprising the gelatinization of a sol to form a wet gel and the immersion of at least one wet gel in an immersion liquid. In the above process, the immersion liquid contacting with the wet gel is forced to form a uniform flow on the surface of the wet gel to control the concentration of dopant. A columnar wet gel 2 having tapered bottom is held in an immersion tank 1 at the center of a holding cylinder 3 with a lower holding member 4 and a upper holding member 5 and a plurality of wet gels are arranged in a flow-straightening cylinder 6 in circular form. A uniform flow of the immersion liquid contacting with the wet gel is formed by attaching a flow restriction cylinder 7, a flow-straightening plate 8, etc.
