PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the destruction of electrodes due to generated gas with the decomposition of electrolyte and also to prevent both the capacity decline of a battery and the deterioration of cycling characteristics by forming a carbon coating layer on the surface of a graphite particle previously treated with a surfactant. SOLUTION: This method is to blend 100 pts.wt. graphite particles having 0.335-0.340 nm average spacing of (002) face, >=10 nm crystallite thickness in the direction of (002) face, >=10 nm crystallite thickness in the direction of (110) face in an X-ray wide-angle diffraction method, <=0.4 peak intensity ratio at 1,360 cm-1 to at 1,580 cm-1 in an argon laser Raman spectroscopy, BET specific surface area 0.1-150 m2/g, average particle diameter 0.1 μm-1 cm and density 1.9-2.26 g/cm3 with 5-1000 pts.wt. surfactant at 10-100 deg.C and then to heat-treat the mixture at 100-500 deg.C in an inert gas atmosphere, an oxidative one or a reductive one containing hydrogen gas so as to form a carbon coating layer on the surface of a graphite particle. |
