PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a compound which is useful as an orange to scarlet reactive dye by selecting a specific monoazo compound or its salt. SOLUTION: A compound represented by formula I or its salt is selected. In the formula, n is 0 or 1; R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-4C alkyl group optionally substituted by OH, CN, an alkoxy, carboxy, carbamoyl, alkoxycarbonyl, alkylcarbonyloxy, sulfo, sulfamoyl or halogen; A is a 1-4C alkyl group optionally substituted by a 1-4C alkoxy, a phenylene group optionally mono- or disubstituted by a 1-4C alkoxy, sulfo or halogen or a naphthylene group optionally monosubstituted by sulfo; Y is -SO2CH=CH2 or -SO2CH2CH2Z; Z is a group separable by an alkali; and X is a pyridinio group optionally mono- or disubstituted by carboxyl or carbamoyl. A compound represented by formula II is an example of this compound. This compound (salt) is excellent in dyeing power, especially in deep coloring and at a low salt concentration, and is hardly influenced by the dyeing temperature, the amounts of auxiliaries, and the variation in bath ratio.
