PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure a narrow gap at high precision, even in the case of being high temp. atmosphere by directing a laser beam from a laser beam generator into the gap between the surface of a cooling roll and the opening part of a nozzle, vivrating the laser beam in the diameter direction and detecting the quantity of heat of the laser beam passed through the gap. SOLUTION: The laser beam generator is composed of a laser head 9 for generating the laser beam and a laser beam driver 10 for driving this laser beam, and a calory meter is composed of a calorimeter head 13 for detecting the heat quantity of the laser beam and an energy meter 14 for converting the detected heat quantity into an electric signal. The electric signal of the energy meter 14 is converted into the gap value. A scanner 11 is directed to the gap by reflecting the laser beam from the laser head 9 and also, the laser beam is driven to turn in the arrow mark direction by working the laser head driver 10 and vibrated in the diameter direction. In this way, the rapidly cooled and solidified metal strip having good precision of the strip thickness and high performance is stably obtd.
