PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the rotational resistance and to ensure the good feeling by specifying the axial pocket clearance gap between a pocket of a holding unit and a torque transmission ball. SOLUTION: A holding unit 4 comprises three window-shaped pockets 4b for accommodating the torque transmission balls 3. The 'clearance gap >=0' is satisfied when an axial dimension of the pocket 4b is L, a diameter of the ball 3 is DBALL, and the axial pocket clearance gap between the pocket 4b and the ball 3 isδ=L-DBALL, whereby the rolling characteristic of the balls 3 can be improved, and the rotational resistance of a joint can be reduced. When the clearance gapδis excess, the guiding function of the balls 3 by the holding unit 4 is impaired, and the constant velocity of the joint can not be kept. By keeping the optimum range of the clearance gapδwithin a range of 0<=δ<=55μm, both of the rotational resistance and the feeling can be properly kept. The rotational backlash can be prevented by a pre-load application means for reducing the clearance gap between the ball and a ball track, and the compact and lightweight universal joint can be manufactured with the low cost.
