PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sustain a constant main scan write start position at all times by controlling the image data write start position based on a pixel clock obtained through frequency division of a reference high frequency clock by first and second specified values. SOLUTION: An imaging apparatus, i.e., a plotter, forms images with a plurality of kinds of pixel density by controlling the r.p.m. of a polygon motor for scanning a sub-scan line and the frequency of a pixel clock for determining the image data transfer rate. The imaging apparatus has a first counter 2 for dividing the frequency of a reference high frequency clock from an oscillator 1 by a first specified value stored in a first register 4, and a second counter 5 for dividing the frequency of a frequency division clock from the counter 2 based on a second specified value stored in a second register 5 or the first specified value. Write start position of image data is controlled by counting pixel clocks delivered from the second counter.
