PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a steel code elemental wire in which disconnection is hard to be generated even if being applied with intensive working in wire drawing, and longitudinal cracks are hard to be generated in the subsequent stranded wire drawing. SOLUTION: In the material for a steel code elemental wire after final patenting treatment composed of a high carbon steel wire rod contg. 0.8 to 1.1 wt.% carbon and whose wire diameter is 0.6 to 2.5 mm, the orientation R of the metallic structure in the axial center part at a fractured part in a tensile test=(the density of carbide in the radius direction/the density of carbide in the axial direction) is 2.7 to 5.0.
