PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare a highly active catalyst for olefin polymerization including a fine clay based substance as a catalyst constituent obtained by suspending a clay material in an aqueous medium and applying a wet crushing processing. SOLUTION: This catalyst uses a fine clay based material obtained by suspending a clay based material (clay, clay mineral, ion-exchanging layered compound, or the like, are cited, and clay or clay mineral, phyllosilicates are preferred, especially smectite and montmorillonite are preferred among them), and applying a wet crushing processing thereto. The catalyst is prepared by contacting the crushed product with a transition metal compound after drying. An alkali metal compound (e.g.; hydroxide of an alkali metal, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, a salt of an organic carboxylic acid, fluoride, or the like) is preferably added in the suspending and wet crushing processings.
