PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently purify and recover a chain poly(phenol sulfide) that is useful as an antioxidant, a catalyst, a metal scavenger, an extreme pressure agent, and an intermediate for polymer materials by bringing a mixture of a specific phenol and phenol sulfide into contact with acetic acid and separating and recovering the solidified acetic acid adduct of chain poly(phenol sulfide). SOLUTION: A phenol or a mixture thereof with phenol sulfide of formula I (R1 is a 1-20C hydrocarbon; a and b are each 0 or 1; m is 1-8; n is 1-20) is brought into contact with acetic acid and the solidified acetic acid adduct of chain poly(phenol sulfide) of the formula II (d and e are each 0 or 1; p is 1-8; q is 5-20) are separated and recovered thereby purifying and recovering the objective compound. The phenol sulfide can be prepared by allowing a phenol halide to react with an alkali metal sulfide. In a preferred embodiment, the amount of acetic acid is 1-3 grams per gram of the phenol sulfide. In the case that the solid formation is retarded, the acetic acid is added thereto under stirring with heat at 60-100 deg.C.
