PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base paper for a release paper, enabling the release paper excellent in separating performance to be produced by being directly applied with a releasing agent such as a solvent-type silicone, a aqueous emulsion silicone or a solventless silicone without requiring polyethylene lamination. SOLUTION: This base paper for a release paper has a coated layer with pigment on at least one surface of the base paper made mainly of wood pulp- based fibers. the binder in the coated layer with pigment is a synthetic latex having a toluene-insoluble gel content not less than 88 wt.% and less than 100 wt.% and is contained in a weight ratio (pigment/binder) of (45/55)-(70/30).
