FADE DETECTOR AND INFORMATION CODER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fade detector that can accurately decide a fade picture without providing a separate frame memory for deciding the fade picture and to provide an information coder provided with the fade detector. SOLUTION: A difference absolute sum calculation section 2 sums difference absolute values of each pixel in two consecutive image patterns by one image pattern to calculate a difference absolute sum as to an original picture before being rearranged by a pre-processing section 1. Furthermore, a prediction error absolute sum calculation section 4 sums difference absolute sums in the unit of each macro block calculated at detection of a motion vector by a motion quantity detection section 3 by one image pattern to calculate a distortion value. When a decision section 13 detects the picture to be a fade picture when number of pictures is a prescribed number or over in the case that the difference absolute sum is smaller than a 1st threshold and the distortion value is larger than a 2nd threshold.
