PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-speed and highly accurate magnetic head positioning mechanism and its driving method. SOLUTION: This magnetic head positioning mechanism is provided with a fine actuator section 6 having a magnetic head supporting mechanism 5 for supporting a slider 2 having a magnetic head 1 loaded therein and a magnetic head supporting mechanism holding part 30 for holding the magnetic head supporting mechanism 5, and a coarse actuator section 7 joined to the fine actuator section 6 and having a holder arm 11 supported so as to be swung. The coarse actuator section 7 is provided with a first driving means 12 for swinging the holder arm 11 in a seeking direction, and the fine actuator section 6 is provided with a second driving means 16 for swinging a magnetic head 1 in the seeking direction by a very small amount independently of the swinging motion of the holder arm 11. The finer actuator section 6 is also provided with a vibration suppressing means 32 for suppressing vibration generated in the holder arm 11 of the coarse actuator 7 following the swinging motion of the magnetic head supporting mechanism 5 in the fine actuator section 6.
